What is reiki and how does it work?

Reiki is a Japanese relaxation and stress reduction technique that also promotes the body’s natural healing abilities by rebalancing energy flow.

The practitioner taps into the flow of life force energy (also called Ki, Qi/Chi or Prana) and offers it to you. Treatments unblock and rebalance the flow of energy and restore harmony within your body.

What is reiki used for?

Similarly to other Eastern techniques, reiki is a holistic energy work modality. It sees the body as a whole, and promotes both physical healing and mental/emotional well-being.

It is particularly effective for helping with stress reduction and anxiety, but also fatigue, sadness and physical pain.

Additionally, regular reiki treatments reconnect us to the flow of universal energy and bring a spiritual connection into our daily life.

Where does Reiki energy come from?

Reiki energy is the universal life force energy.

Eastern medicine has worked with this energy for thousands of years, recognising its flow through all living things. This life force energy is called Ki in Japanese, Qi/Chi in Mandarin and Prana in Sanskrit.

The only thing that is channelled through reiki is pure Ki/Qi energy. The practitioner does not give his/her own energy, but simply act as a conduit.

What happens in a Reiki session?

A reiki treatment lasts approximately one hour. The client lies on the treatment plinth fully clothed under a light blanket while the practitioner connects to reiki and channels the energy through his/her body and out through his/her palms.

Reiki can be received hands-on through gentle touch, or hands-off with palms placed a couple of inches away from the body. It is always the client’s choice.

What does reiki feel like?

The experience of reiki is different for everyone, and can also vary from treatment to treatment for the same person.

The most common feeling is one of deep relaxation and inner peace.

Some clients may feel heat/cold from the practitioner’s hands, or feel temperature changes in their own body. Some may feel tingling, pulsations, or waves. Some see colours in their mind’s eye. And some don’t feel anything at all and that is normal too, it is not necessary for you to feel the energy for it to work.

What to expect after a reiki session?

Clients leave reiki treatments with a deep sense of calm and feeling of inner peace.

Clients also report a sense of improved mental clarity and generally sleep really well the night following a treatment.

If you have a physical issue, you may notice an immediate improvement.

How many reiki sessions are needed?

Reiki is gentle and cumulative, which means that each treatment builds on the effects of the previous ones. Therefore, it could take a few treatments before you notice a significant improvement in your condition.

While everyone’s needs are different, 4 treatments is a good general recommendation to evaluate your response and improvements.

You can get reiki as much and as often as you like, there is no such thing as too much reiki. In fact most reiki practitioners give themselves daily self-treatments.

Can reiki be done remotely?

Absolutely! Reiki is energy work and it is possible for the practitioner to give reiki treatments without the client being in the same room or geographic location. Energy has no boundaries, we are all connected, the practitioner is able to transmit reiki beyond physical touch.

Clients experience the exact same physical sensations during virtual treatments as in person. Distance reiki sessions are ideal in our current pandemic climate as you can experience the exact same benefits from the comfort and safety of your own home.

Is reiki safe during pregnancy?

Reiki is a gentle energy modality and is 100% safe during pregnancy, from conception to birth.

If you have experienced pregnancy loss, receiving reiki treatments in your first trimester can support you during those difficult few weeks with its relaxing and calming effects.

Can reiki help fertility?

In my personal opinion, reiki alone cannot restore fertility but I believe it is a valuable support.

Fertility journeys are emotional rollercoasters often experienced in loneliness and isolation, reiki can help destress and relax the body and mind along the way, while providing nurturing and connection at the same time.
